About us
We’ve built strong working relationships with leading firms in architecture and engineering consulting to bring complex projects to life. Over the years, we’ve also teamed up with experts from other areas of construction, allowing us to take on a broad range of projects backed by proven expertise and collaboration.
In 1997, we were awarded the Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Queen for our work on behalf of the Royal household, in particular the fire restoration works at Windsor Castle. We are proud to continue our association with the Royal Family, having recently been awarded the Royal Warrant to His Majesty the King.
The History of Alden
1923-1929
FG Alden Ltd was founded in 1923 by Frederick George Alden and first operated from Oxford High Street before moving to New Road in 1925. The company built a reputation for complete country house installations, becoming one of the first in the country to use welded pipework.
1930-1938
Throughout the 1930s, Alden made great strides in air conditioning as well as central heating, an area that became known as environmental engineering and now forms a key pillar of our services.
1939-1945
At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, Alden became heavily involved in Britain’s war effort, turning over their workforce to the needs of the nation.
1946-1949
Following the war, Alden’s experience working with the country’s universities paid great dividends. The Government’s interest in education meant that this became a considerable growth area for the company, and another important sector in our ongoing work.
1950-1960
During the 1950s, Alden carried out many contracts for the Government, and undertook the refurbishment of London’s Guildhall.
1961
In 1961, Alden moved to Aristotle Lane.
1962-1969
The new prosperity of the 1960s brought contracts in the commercial sector, particularly office blocks and retail outlets, helping to shape our company’s expertise in private sector developments.
1970-1989
Alden was heavily involved in the hospital expansion programme of the 1970s and early 1980s, playing a pivotal role in transforming healthcare infrastructure across the country.
1990-1999
Throughout the 1990s, Alden’s contracts expanded to include work within the pharmaceutical research and manufacturing industry, further developing our technical expertise and sector-specific knowledge.
2000
In the year 2000, Alden moved to Langford Locks, Kidlington, where we’re still located to this day.
2001-present
Since entering the 21st century, the Alden team is proud to have been associated with many prestigious projects, including the Saïd Business School, Tusmore House, Kensington Palace and Lord’s Pavilion.
Investment in school leaving apprentices
Alden has a long and proud history of delivering training and apprenticeship schemes to young people to provide engineers for the future. This is an important part of our legacy, and our dedication to maintaining the quality of the UK’s building services industry.
Every year we look to recruit apprentices in the following areas:
- Technical (design) & estimating apprentice
- Domestic and commercial heating and plumbing
- Service and maintenance
By combining studying and hands-on work alongside experienced engineers, an apprenticeship at FG Alden provides a well-rounded education backed by over 100 years in the industry. Many of our current senior managers and directors once started out as apprentices, and have gone on to have decades-long careers as part of the Alden family.

Meet the Alden team
The majority of the Alden team has been with the company for many years, helping us to uphold the same philosophies of quality and value that the business was originally founded on. Our directly employed workforce of approximately 100 includes design engineers, estimators, contract managers, quantity surveyors, REVIT engineers, CAD operators, commissioning engineers and a team of experienced site engineers. This allows us to ensure the quality and reliability of every project we undertake.
